Out Hear Events

Out Hear takes people into Australia’s special outdoor spaces for a unique experience of sound and listening. On these soundwalks our ears are opened to the sounds around us, helping us to deeply connect with the land and life of Australia. They are refreshing nature-based cultural experiences with artists creating sounds that resonate in these specific environments. Out Hear is run by AFAE member, Dale Gorfinkel.

Upcoming Out Hear events are:

Sunday October 23, 2pm:
Soundpaddle on Yarra River with Alice Hui-Sheng Chang
Canoes, paddles, voices.

Sunday November 6, 2pm:
Soundwalk with Laura Altman (SYD) & Peter Farrar (Blue Mountains)

November: Out Hear Festival at Footscray Community Arts Centre part of the Big West Festival
Big West Festival weekend installations: Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th November 11am – 4pm
Performances: Friday 25th November 8pm
Opening performance: 17th November 6-8pm

Douglas Quin Melbourne Talk

The Australian Forum for Acoustic Ecology is very excited to have Douglas Quin, an iconic field recordist, present his extensive knowledge of place and sound. After successful presentations in Brisbane and ANU, Canberra on Antarctica, he will be in Melbourne to expand on his experiences and processes of field recording and Acoustic Ecology.  Dr Douglas Quin is a media manipulator and a master of Sound recording. He is coming to Melbourne to talk about his experience and thoughts on landscape and nature with specific regard to Antarctica and other wild places he has been to.

Audio Engineering Society session with Douglas Quin on Technology, Techniques and Approach to Natural Soundscape Recording, exploring the changes in his use of technology and techniques for location recordings over more than 2 decades. It will be held at Swinburne University of Technology on Thursday 30th June 2011 at 7.30pm in the Engineering Building, level 1, room EN101. The session is free and all are welcomed.

Soundwalks at 2011 Melbourne Open House

The Melbourne Open House phenomenon has invited the AFAE to participate in their program this year and it is an exciting inclusion to an event that is favourite event amongst Melbourne residents. Evening soundwalks at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival

This year the Melbourne international Jazz Festival will be hosting a series of Evening Soundwalks to discover Melbourne’s distinctive sonic landscape. This is a free event that will encourage deeper and more considered approaches to sound and the understanding of contemporary music. They will be a simple and potent contrast to the traditional music festival audience experience.
